FAQ: What’s the Difference Between Local and Remote Power Supplies?

It tends to be that power requirements and specs can be a tedious and confusing part of purchasing new lighting. We thought we’d take some of the pressure off by showing you the difference between local and remote power supplies so you can feel confident about your fixture.

Local Power Supplies

A local power supply (or integral power supply) is typically used when you have an existing junction box and/or cannot run new low-voltage wiring. The local power supply is housed in a canopy that is provided with the fixture, which mounts to a 4″ octagon junction box (also called a fixture box). The connection to 120VAC is made at the junction box.

Remote Power Supplies (Recommended)

A remote power supply is located separately from the fixture, connected to the fixture via low voltage wiring. The remote power supply is typically located in an accessible place such as a utility closet, cabinet, basement, or attic no further than 50 feet from the fixture (distance is determined by the gauge of wiring used by the electrician). The connection to 120VAC is made at the remote power supply location. This method does not require wiring directly to a junction box or a canopy, but if needed, Juniper will provide a 5″ x 1/2″ junction box cover plate or mounting plate.
