3 Types of Lighting

Oct

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Lighting, as simple as it sounds, is a game-changer in building or remodeling a space. It can contribute to your productivity when doing certain tasks or accentuate a dull corner. With its diverse purpose, we listed common types of lighting to determine what kind of fixture you should install to execute your lighting plans.

1. AMBIENT LIGHTING

This is one of the most basic types of lighting and is also referred to as general lighting. Ambient lighting radiates a subtle illumination without glare that provides the right amount of light in a room. It is the central piece from which designers build on with more fixtures to accentuate a room. This is commonly achieved through central chandeliers, recessed lighting, and lighting diffused by splashing onto a wall.

Recommended Juniper fixtures:

THIN Chandelier, Axis Wall Sconce, & THIN Suspension[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width="1/2"][vc_single_image image="4507" img_size="large" alignment="center" onclick="custom_link" link="http://www.test.juniper-design.com/products/thin-chandelier/"][vc_column_text]

[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

2. TASK LIGHTING

Task lighting is used for productive activities that need a more concentrated amount of light (e.g., reading, cooking, studying, & applying makeup). To enhance clarity and reduce headaches, we recommend investing in fixtures that minimize glare, are the optimal light temperature, and have the capability to be adjusted through dimming or rotating.

Recommended Juniper fixtures:

[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

3. ACCENT LIGHTING

Accent lighting is used to highlight a specific feature in a room, such as an artwork. However, it should not be the focal lighting in a room, rather, it should only add depth or character to the space. Accent lighting can be used to showcase furniture, cast light onto end tables, or accentuate architectural elements in your space like shelving or inset bookcases.

Recommended Juniper fixtures:

HOW TO ACHIEVE ALL THREE TYPES OF LIGHTING

If you want to achieve a space with depth, light and shadow, with a cozy atmosphere, opt for building a space in layers where each type of lighting is represented. Create a cohesive design by utilizing different styles of lighting, but unifying them with a central theme. Our THIN System is incredibly versatile while still retaining its 1/2-inch solid brass profile. Add adjustability to your lighting by installing dimmers. Contact our sales team for more recommendations on how we can make this happen.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width="1/3"][vc_btn title="Explore All Lighting" style="flat" shape="square" color="inverse" align="center" button_block="true" link="url:http%3A%2F%2Fwww.test.juniper-design.com%2Fproducts%2F|||"][/vc_column][vc_column width="1/3"][vc_btn title="Inquire About Our Fixtures" style="flat" shape="square" color="inverse" align="center" button_block="true" link="url:http%3A%2F%2Fwww.test.juniper-design.com%2Fcustomer-service%2F|||"][/vc_column][vc_column width="1/3"][vc_btn title="Read More Articles" style="flat" shape="square" color="inverse" align="center" button_block="true" link="url:http%3A%2F%2Fwww.test.juniper-design.com%2Fmodern-lighting-blog%2F|||"][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Direct Lighting VS Indirect Lighting

Oct
12

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Determining a fixture’s purpose always has to come first before selecting your design of choice. If you own beautifully crafted lighting but use its illumination incorrectly, it will look noticeably out of place. To avoid this mistake, we defined the difference between using direct lighting and indirect lighting.

DIRECT LIGHTING

Direct lighting casts an illumination from the fixture onto a desired subject or area. Because this is a straightforward radiation, it acts as task lighting that functions to help daily tasks (e.g., reading, cooking, writing, & studying).

WHEN TO USE DIRECT LIGHTING:

Because it radiates powerful illumination, it is best used for detailed tasks and productive activities. It also becomes ideal in providing light to a subject that needs more focus. However, when using an overly powerful fixture, your subject may appear too harsh. Look into dimmers for adjustability.

WHERE TO USE DIRECT LIGHTING:

Use this mainly in areas that require stronger illumination such as an office space, dining room, and study area. We recommend The Metropolis Suspension that features up to 8,200LM and independently-controlled high-output bisectional hemispheres. Other areas to use direct lighting are in bathroom vanities, living rooms, artwork, countertops, and undercabinets.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width="1/2"][vc_single_image image="11471" img_size="full" alignment="center" onclick="custom_link" link="http://www.test.juniper-design.com/products/thin-surface-mount-display-light/"][vc_column_text]

[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

INDIRECT LIGHTING

Indirect lighting utilizes a fixture as a source to spread light outside just one target object. This is to create ambient lighting, also known as general lighting, which helps you navigate your way around the space. It also accentuates a space or provides a reflective light.

WHEN TO USE INDIRECT LIGHTING:

Opt for indirect lighting if you want an illuminated room without casting a harsh light beam. Commonly used to create ambiance, indirect lighting usually just adds overall brightness of a space.

WHERE TO USE INDIRECT LIGHTING:

Indirect lighting can be used in areas where you want a softer light to relax or set a mood. We recommend the THIN Multiples with fully rotatable segments you can adjust on-site to customize both direct and indirect lighting experiences. You can also create longer runs with its magnetic connectors.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width="1/2"][vc_single_image image="11479" img_size="full" alignment="center" onclick="custom_link" link="http://www.test.juniper-design.com/products/thin-multiples-tetrad/"][vc_column_text]

3 Tips When Choosing Linear Picture Lights

Oct
10

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]A straightforward way to illuminate a masterpiece is installing a picture light. Design is a major influence, but we named other important elements that are often overlooked when choosing linear picture lights.

1. CHOOSE THE CORRECT LENS

Your choice of lens finish greatly affects how your picture light illuminates your artwork. We recommend a frosted lens finish to disperse a delicate glow that avoids glare on glass picture frames. It also has a beam angle that is two times wider than a clear lens', so it spreads light across the picture more evenly.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width="1/2"][vc_single_image image="6273" img_size="full" alignment="center" onclick="custom_link" link="http://www.test.juniper-design.com/products/thin-surface-mount-picture-light/"][vc_column_text]

Frosted Lens (Top) and Clear Lens (Bottom)

[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][vc_column width="1/2"][vc_single_image image="11179" img_size="full" alignment="center" onclick="custom_link" link="http://www.test.juniper-design.com/products/thin-surface-mount-picture-light/"][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

2. DETERMINE THE RIGHT DIMENSIONS

Modern linear art lights normally extend past the frame or canvas, compared to traditional picture lights that are more narrow than the piece. The right standoff height for picture lights should be greater than the thickness of the frame or canvas to illuminate up to the center of the art. Generally, we recommend the 7-inch standoff.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width="1/2"][vc_single_image image="11181" img_size="full" alignment="center" onclick="custom_link" link="http://www.test.juniper-design.com/products/thin-surface-mount-picture-light/"][vc_column_text]

THIN Surface Mount in Black Oxide with Magnetic Connectors

[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]To install picture lights, simply place it in the same distance above the picture as the standoff height (e.g., A 7-inch standoff will mean your picture light should also be 7 inches above your artwork). Since most picture lights can no longer be adjusted once installed, our THIN Surface Mount Picture Lights with rotatable segments will be helpful.

3. ADJUST DIMMING AND COLOR TEMPERATURE

Apart from being 6 times less efficient than LED's, incandescent bulbs emit UV light that destroys a painting's appearance and value. Even museums today have switched over to LED lamping, a lighting solution that does not only preserve an artwork's true colors, but also cuts costs. Opt for picture lights that are compatible with dimmers to cast an adjustable glow, instead of a stagnant harsh illumination. We also recommend 3000K, a warm white color temperature, to retain the art’s true colors.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width="1/2"][vc_single_image image="11190" img_size="full" alignment="center" onclick="custom_link" link="http://www.test.juniper-design.com/products/thin-surface-mount-picture-light/"][vc_column_text]

How Proper Lighting Affects Productivity In An Office

Oct
05

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Like all offices, Juniper aims to provide a conducive environment for all employees with the use of proper lighting. We enumerated why it is smart to invest in light fixtures you and your coworkers can benefit from.

1. IMPROVES FOCUS

Bright lighting stimulates individuals to be attentive because it creates an atmosphere they are comfortable to work in. It also minimizes downtime, which pushes employees to work their best.

What Juniper recommends:

The Metropolis Suspension

The Metropolis Suspension Capabilities:

Top and bottom bisections can be independently dimmed, illuminates large spaces with a high output of up to 8,200LM, and has an optional mesh overlay to diffuse lighting.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width="1/2"][vc_single_image image="11155" img_size="full" alignment="center" onclick="custom_link" link="http://www.test.juniper-design.com/products/metropolis/"][vc_column_text]

2. REDUCES DISTRACTION

The last thing you want is a headache brought by insufficient lighting, but too bright of a light can also cause eyestrain. Dimmers are helpful to customize your lighting experience with its warm-to-dim options.

What Juniper recommends:

Ground Control Dimmers

Ground Control Capabilities:

Solid brass casing, satisfying click-stop, compatibility with all Juniper lighting and 12-24V Constant Voltage lighting, and installation on all furniture or surfaces with a maximum thickness of 1.5 inches (with 2 inches of clearance behind the surface).[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width="1/2"][vc_single_image image="7104" img_size="full" alignment="center" onclick="custom_link" link="http://www.test.juniper-design.com/products/ground-control-dimmers/"][vc_column_text]

3. ENHANCES READABILITY

Reading visibility is accompanied by an optimal setting. Positioning your light directly on your pages improves text size, compared to lighting radiating over your shoulder. It also helps store new information better when you can read clearly.

What Juniper recommends:

THIN Task Lamp

THIN Task Lamp Capabilities:

High-output LED light through a clear lens for a focused beam angle, built-in on-off dimmer to adjust brightness, has a ball joint at its base to extend the body, and available in two sizes (Standard & Tall).[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width="1/2"][vc_single_image image="3037" img_size="full" alignment="center" onclick="custom_link" link="http://www.test.juniper-design.com/products/thin-task-lamp-desk-inset/"][vc_column_text]

5 Basic Lighting Terms You Need to Know

Sep
28

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]With lighting technology constantly changing, vocabulary can easily become daunting. We went back to the basics to help sort out some commonly confusing lighting terms so you can feel confident about our lighting specifications. [/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_single_image image="8904" img_size="full" alignment="center" onclick="custom_link" link="http://www.test.juniper-design.com/products/thin-task-lamp-desk-inset/"][vc_column_text]

[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

1. WATTAGE

Wattage (W) measures the use of power. The lower the wattage, the more efficient it is. For incandescent lamping, a lower wattage usually means a dimmer bulb. But in terms of LED's, as a result of our growing technology, there is now less of a correlation between wattage and lower lumens. LED's are now lower in wattage while still producing the same lumen output. A fixture with LED lamping can use as little as 6W, which is up to 7 times more efficient than incandescent bulbs.

2. LUMENS

Lumens (LM) is what measures your fixture’s brightness capacity. We recommend 400-600LM, preferably with dimming capabilities, for direct task lighting. To determine the right lumens for your space, multiply your space square footage by its respective foot-candle. Refer to the chart below.
RESIDENTIAL SPACE AVG. ROOM SIZE RECOMMENDED FOOT-CANDLES AVG TOTAL LUMENS
Bedroom 220 sq ft 10-20

2,200LM

Bathroom

135 sq ft 70-80 9,450LM
Kitchen 200 sq ft 30-40

6,000LM

Dining Room

150 sq ft 30-40 4,500LM
Living Room 250 sq ft 10-20

2,500LM

Foot-candles for common home spaces

[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

3. CRI

Color-Rendering Index (CRI) is the valuation of a color's appearance under a light source, as opposed to natural light. We recommend at least 90 CRI for the most accurate color translation. See below to check your fixture's CRI rating.

0-55 CRI

(Poor)

We don’t recommend using lighting with this low of a CRI rating.

60-85 CRI (Good) Most LED lighting falls in this range. It’s good, but could be better.

90-100 CRI

(Excellent)

Juniper fixtures have a standard 90 CRI rating, for excellent color accuracy and quality.

CRI Rating

[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

4. COLOR TEMPERATURE

Color Temperature is the color of light your fixture provides. It is measured using Kelvin (K), on a scale of 1,000K (candlelight) to 10,000K (daylight). The lower the color temperature is, the more orange your light emits. The higher the color temperature, the more blue it emits. See the chart below to determine the recommended color temperature for spaces.
COLOR TEMPERATURE RECOMMENDED SPACES

2,400K-2,800K

(Tungsten Light)

Intimate spaces: bedroom, living room, dining areas, lounges, bar spaces

2,800K-3,200K

(Warm White - Most Common)

Neutral spaces: showrooms, retail stores, workspaces, kitchens, bathrooms, lobbies, entryways
3,200K-4,500K (Pale Blue Daylight) Productive spaces: kitchens, offices, coworking spaces, bathrooms, healthcare spaces

5. VOLTAGE

Voltage (V) is what enables your fixture to work. Using too high of a voltage will likely result in destroying your fixture, and too low of a voltage may not supply enough pressure to power it. It is essential that you understand what your light’s voltage is since each location has their designated voltages. We highly suggest using our global voltage map.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width="1/3"][vc_btn title="Explore All Juniper Fixtures" style="flat" shape="square" color="inverse" align="center" button_block="true" link="url:http%3A%2F%2Fwww.test.juniper-design.com%2Fcustomer-service%2Fhttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.test.juniper-design.com%2Fproducts%2F|||"][/vc_column][vc_column width="1/3"][vc_btn title="Talk To Our Sales Team" style="flat" shape="square" color="inverse" align="center" button_block="true" link="url:http%3A%2F%2Fwww.test.juniper-design.com%2Fcustomer-service%2F|||"][/vc_column][vc_column width="1/3"][vc_btn title="Read More Helpful Articles" style="flat" shape="square" color="inverse" align="center" button_block="true" link="url:http%3A%2F%2Fwww.test.juniper-design.com%2Ffrequently-asked-questions%2F|||"][/vc_column][/vc_row]

5 Ways to Elevate A Modern Restaurant

Sep
21

Guests don't just pay for food. They pay for the atmosphere, especially if your restaurant is instagram-worthy. We've listed five simple, but effective, ways to elevate a modern restaurant.

3 Ways To Choose Modern Lighting Over a Countertop

Sep
10

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Remodeling your kitchen goes beyond dressing up countertops and overhauling tiles. It is not only a room to cook hearty meals but also a space to create meaningful conversations. Because it is such a flexible place, there are practical ways in choosing a countertop modern light.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width="1/2"][vc_single_image image="10279" img_size="full" alignment="center" onclick="custom_link" link="http://www.test.juniper-design.com/products/thin-surface-mount-display-light/"][vc_column_text]

[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][vc_column width="1/2"][vc_column_text]

1. GO FOR FIXTURES WITH BRIGHT LIGHT

A fixture's orientation greatly affects how much light is cast. A common way to install lighting is by simply suspending it over a countertop. However, another alternative for direct lighting is to mount it under a cabinet (shown). Note that because countertops are usually glossy, going for a frosted lens will help reduce glare.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width="1/2"][vc_single_image image="10281" img_size="full" alignment="center" onclick="custom_link" link="http://www.test.juniper-design.com/products/thin-suspension/"][vc_column_text]

[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][vc_column width="1/2"][vc_column_text]

2. OPT FOR ADJUSTABILITY

Since kitchens are multi-functional, deciding on a fixture that has the capability to be both a task and ambient light when needed is essential. Compatibility with dimmers may do the trick, but rotatable segments are also a huge help in controlling direct and indirect lighting.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width="1/2"][vc_single_image image="10282" img_size="full" alignment="center" onclick="custom_link" link="http://www.test.juniper-design.com/products/thin-suspension/"][vc_column_text]

[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][vc_column width="1/2"][vc_column_text]

3. CHOOSE A MINIMAL DESIGN

These days, the market is bombarded with bulky fixtures that unfortunately don't always go hand in hand with modern spaces. Take a closer look at our THIN Collection which showcases 1/2-inch diameter segments possessing high-output lumens. On top of that, all of our fixtures use LED lamping, which means its life can run for as long 50,000 hours or 15 years.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

RENOVATING YOUR MODERN KITCHEN SOON?

Juniper manufactures fixtures that have various installation options to fit your lighting plans.
