Surface Magazine Tasks New York Bartenders to Create Design-Inspired Cocktails

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Surface Magazine tasked a well-established group of New York bartenders to find inspiration for new cocktails in an unlikely place; product design. Creating a new and innovative cocktail is no easy feat. But what separates this group from the everyday bartender is interpreting a visual object into a flavor profile that also delivers its visual inspiration. Among Juniper's own Ground Control Collection are other contemporary objects meant to spark inspiration. From light and playful Bon Bon Boxes by Tina Frey to the deep and mystical Interno by Anna by RabLabs, inspiration was pulled from all corners of design. Pamela Wiznitzer, Creative Director of Seamstress, was given the Ground Control Collection as inspiration for her cocktail. She discusses her inspiration and concept:

“Power is about switching on and off—it’s one extreme or another. For this drink, I decided to nod to old and to modern. The light switches are essentially updating the power source. So I created two similar cocktails served differently. One is hot and one is cold. I envisioned the drinker toggling between to the two to get flavor explosions in their mouth. I used gin’s predecessor, genever, for the old. The modern version has Brooklyn Gin because that is where the company is based. The hot version is a play on the toddy, with citrus and tea garnished elegantly for aromatics. The cold is shaken egg white, which gives it a completely different texture. The concept of tea. The golden color—and edible gold-leaf garnish—match the switches.”

Their team spoke to Juniper’s founder and owner, Shant Madjarian, to discuss the practical use of dual-purpose lighting.   Shant shared his in-depth insight of how LED’s can become even more efficient lighting solutions when designed thoughtfully. Dual-purpose lighting exhibits its cost-effectiveness by functioning both as a light source and decorative piece, such as The Wally that adorned Moxy Hotel Times Square's hallways. This playful sign lighting cuts costs as it can also be customized as a room indicator with vinyl decals. In turn, this hallway sign lighting reduces clutter because it cancels other elements, like traditional handle cards when using The Wally as a ‘Do Not Disturb’ indicator for hotel rooms.   Dual-purpose lighting becomes more convenient when it is intended to be portable. Our dimmable M Lamp with a rotatable head, designed by David Irwin, features a slim handle to tastefully carry the aluminum modern lamp. We devised a long-lasting battery life for the M Lamp so users can easily bring it outside or move it in other spaces they wish to use it in.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width="1/2"][vc_single_image image="4957" img_size="full" alignment="center" onclick="custom_link" link="http://www.test.juniper-design.com/products/the-wally/"][vc_column_text]

Elle Decor is an American publication that rings a bell to both design professionals and enthusiasts because it is an exciting platform that covers chic and stylish discoveries. Our THIN System just starred in their Russian edition, Elle Decoration Russia, which establishes our signature collection in their region.   Peter Bristol exclusively designed our wide collection of THIN configurations ranging from wall sconces, suspended fixtures, task lamps, and floor lamps. It made its first public appearance in ICFF in the spring, charming guests for its minimal but powerful linear silhouette. Embraced in solid brass, these fixtures glorify luxurious finishes while exemplifying cost-efficiency through LED lamping.   As the collection grew, our team also ventured beyond modern linear lighting and included geometrical shapes. With figures such as a triangle, rectangle, square, rhombus, and hexagon, we created lighting solutions that adorn all types of residential, commercial, and hospitality spaces.

With its solid aluminum rectangular backplate, this fixture is applauded for its luxurious ethos.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_single_image image="11515" img_size="full" alignment="center" onclick="custom_link" link="http://www.test.juniper-design.com/products/the-metropolis-wall-sconce/"][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]An exceptional feature of The Metropolis Wall Sconce is its divided hemispheres that can be individually controlled by a dimmer. This gives users the option to choose between direct downward lighting or reflective upward lighting. First innovated to adorn a workspace, this module exudes powerful lumens reaching up to 6,800LM. Creating softer illumination, however, is still possible with this high-output fixture by simply opting for a hexagonal mesh diffuser. Inside the Mind of THIN Collection Designer, Peter Bristol

Jun
23

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Discover the inspiration, design process, and future plans of the THIN Collection, designed by Peter Bristol in a one-on-one interview.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

What are the most important things you keep in mind when designing for Juniper?

For Juniper, it seems we are always looking for something that is both new and innovative, yet at the same time, familiar. This is a fine line to walk. While there is no reason to make something that has already been made, creating something "new" for the sake of "new" is also not a reasonable justification. You can feel this type of logic not only in my work with Juniper but all of the products they produce. This will sound like a planted line, but I swear it is not... One more notable thing about working with Juniper is their own internal quality bar. Shant and the team believe in making amazing products and it shows as they work through detail on the THIN projects.

Tell us about the THIN Collection—what are its qualities and what inspired you to create it?

The THIN Collection as it exists now was not an inspired vision. Very much the contrary. It is a living, breathing footprint of products. The first, and possibly most recognizable silhouette in the collection is the THIN Task Lamp. The idea behind it was fairly simple, LED's allow us to completely break free from the constraints of the more traditional incandescent lamps. Embracing the opportunity, we worked to achieve a very small diameter tubing while still providing great light. The reduction in volume allows us to increase the reach of the lamp without being too imposing. The design can actually extend comfortably over a work surface. From a materials standpoint, most of the LED lighting at the time felt "techy" and "producty" somehow making this very elegant light source feel inappropriate. The brass tubing, bearing-style hinge and cast iron base work together to create a lamp that feels both new and familiar at the same time. Perhaps an instant classic.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_single_image image="6675" img_size="full" alignment="center"][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]

Could you take us through the design process, from when you first had the idea to the creation of the final product? What makes the THIN Collection unique?

Like many product lines, the THIN Collection has been continuously evolving since its inception. It seems each step forward with the line sheds light on what to do next. The first in the family was the THIN Task Lamp as discussed above. Since then, we have very naturally added to the line. First, we added more color options and the second addition was making a smaller more attainable version of the Task Lamp. Soon, the Floor Lamp and THIN Suspension series were born and it began to shed light on its own future... The THIN Collection has taken on a life of its own. The THIN system's uniqueness lies in the flexibility that it provides. It is now a vast toolkit that provides almost infinite creativity, like LEGOs for designers and architects. It can be used in subtle ways like lighting art or providing under-cabinet lighting that is worthy of amazing interiors. The system can also be used in incredibly expressive ways, some of the wall lighting arrangements (which by the way, seems hard to find/understand on the site) and the THIN Primaries start to hint at just how far you can take it. One thing I think is difficult to convey is just how great of a toolkit we have developed. As designers start to see it, I think we will see a whole new wave of creativity. It enables a level of reasonably priced high-quality customizable modern lighting that simply doesn't otherwise exist.

What’s next for Juniper and the THIN Collection?

The future is hard to predict, but we will likely continue to evolve and add to the THIN organically. Right now there are more additions and tweaks to make than we can get out the door and I don't see that slowing down in the near future. I am also hoping that as architects and designers start to really work with and understand the system they will let us know what they need/want out of it.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width="1/3"][vc_btn title="Browse All Lighting" style="flat" shape="square" color="inverse" align="center" button_block="true" link="url:http%3A%2F%2Fwww.test.juniper-design.com%2Fproducts%2F|||"][/vc_column][vc_column width="1/3"][vc_btn title="Learn More About Peter Bristol" style="flat" shape="square" color="inverse" align="center" button_block="true" link="url:http%3A%2F%2Fwww.test.juniper-design.com%2Fdesigner-peter-bristol%2F|||"][/vc_column][vc_column width="1/3"][vc_btn title="Read More Articles" style="flat" shape="square" color="inverse" align="center" button_block="true" link="url:http%3A%2F%2Fwww.test.juniper-design.com%2Fjournal%2F|||"][/vc_column][/vc_row]
